Turkish in origin, these dogs were not herders, but shepherd’s dogs to protect the flock. They were known to fight against wolves and bears, but were primarily sentinels. The power that the dog holds works in concert with it’s protective nature. It was only recognized formally as a breed in the 1990s.
This is a dog who will always be in protection mode. It is not a player, so not great with kids, but wonderful for someone who wants protection. It is laid back most of the time, until it senses danger. It will be vocal about danger.
