Also called Groenedael after the kennel that had bred the dogs, these were the longest haired breed of all of the Belgian sheepdogs. They worked as shepherds and guard dogs originally, but have moved into police and sentry work very easily.  During WWI they also worked as messenger dogs. They are still used in police work around the world.

This is not a dog that likes to sit still.  They are always moving and looking out for things. This is an intense breed that doesn’t do well with strangers of the human or canine variety. The breed is dominant and intelligent. It is smart enough to know what to do and independent enough to do it even if you think it is not appropriate.
