Named for their town of origin, Bern, these dogs were Swiss and used for both guarding and driving herds. The breed was nearly lost around 1900, but have since come back strongly.
These dogs are very social with humans and need to feel like they are part of the family. They can be difficult in adolescence, but are very calm afterwards, and throughout their lives. They are wonderful family pets.
