Originally from central Europe, these dogs would attack large game and hang on until the hunter arrived to kill the animal. They were later brought in as bull baiters, like bulldogs. They moved on to handling cattle for butchers, being police dogs, and later, family dogs.
These dogs are playful, loyal, and very curious. They bond tightly to the family, love affection, and do not like being left out of activities. These dogs are great with children but may not be as good with other pets. They will need a steady exercise regiment to be happy.
