Bred after two Newfoundland puppies were found in a shipwreck, several breeds were mixed with them to achieve a strong and cold resistant water retriever. They were used to retrieve ducks from the icy waters of Maryland.
These dogs love the cold, exercise, and pleasing masters. They tend to be independent and protective when strange people or dogs are around. While intelligent, they are more reserved than some dogs. They do well with children usually, but will not put up with too much provocation.
