These dogs came from the Lakes area of England and were excellent game terriers, working alongside hounds. Once considered three separate breeds, the Patterdale, Fell and Elterwater Terriers all eventually fell under the Lakeland breed title.
This is not a dog for first time owners. They have a strong personality and can be difficult if not handled with deft hands. They explore consistently and can get lost. They will require a good amount of exercise to be calm indoors. They are not overly social animals and may take a while to like strangers. This breed is not considered to do well with other pets.
