While the Lhasa has been around for longer than we know, it is first recorded in Tibet in Buddhist monasteries. It was believed that when a Lama died, his soul went into a Lhasa. They also served as watch dogs for the monasteries. The Apso part of its name refers to the goat-like texture of the fur.
For those that want a tough dog in a little body, this is the breed. They are stubborn, independent, and unafraid of other dogs. They are, however, cautions of people stepping on them. They will need mental exercise to keep them happy but are also very happy to cuddle up beside their favorite companion for the day. They are a little aloof with strangers and will bark at the doorbell.
