In ancient Rome, they were used in gladiator pits. In medieval times, they were used for hunting and guarding. They have also been used for bull baiting and bear baiting. The only reason the dog survived WWII is that enough had been brought to America.
With a very calm and gentle demeanor, these dogs can be wonderful as companions for kids. They are relatively lethargic and yet still biddable. Anyone who can’t accept drool will not like this breed.
