Papillon, French for butterfly, was well liked in French nobility, especially in Louis XIV’s court. While the breed began with only drooped ears, there are now erect eared varieties as well. The erect-eared variety are known as Papillon while the droopy eared variety are known as Phalene, or Moth. While they have been bred smaller over the years, they have not suffered overt health problems because of it.
Early life experiences will dictate whether this breed will become an obedient dog that enjoys pleasing through mental activity and games, or a lap dog with some territorial issues. Proper training as a youngster will help determine the dog’s tendencies. These dogs enjoy complexities, especially in games and tasks.
