Coming out of the same stock as the Cairn, Scotty, and Skye, these Scottish dogs had several names before ending up with the name we now know. Other names have included Poltalloch and Roseneath.
Attentive to what is going on, this breed likes to put itself in the middle of things, whatever may be going on. Very eager to get along with those bigger than itself, it is not always friendly with smaller animals. It tends to be independent and will want to do its own thing. Digging and barking are part of the deal with this breed.
