Irish in origin, these dogs worked as vermin killers, herders, and gundogs. The breed has been in America since WWII but is still finding a niche of its own.
Wheatens are very playful. As puppies, they should be given proper boundaries on how to play to prevent rough housing later on in life. They are smart and get along well with people, but are terriers so they can be a little willful. While they may be a bit too much for infants, they tend to be very good with older children.
