This is in the Allium Family and is definitely poisonous to dogs.  Garlic is the most toxic of the family, being five times as deadly as onions and chives are somewhere in the middle of that..  The red blood cells suffer oxidative damage from sulfoxides and disulfides, making them more likely to rupture.  Gastroenteritis will also occur.  Onset may be delayed and not occur for several days but large quantities are required for risk.  Japanese breeds are particularly sensitive to symptoms.  Symptoms can include:

  • Drooling
  • Nausea
  • Oral Irritation
  • Pale Gums
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Inability to Exercise
  • Elevated Heart Rate
  • Elevated Respiratory Rate
  • Collapse
