This is in the Allium Family and is definitely poisonous to dogs.  Onions are not the most toxic of the family, being five times less deadly than garlic.  The red blood cells suffer oxidative damage from sulfoxides and disulfides, making them more likely to rupture.  Gastroenteritis will also occur.  Onset may be delayed and not occur for several days but large quantities are required for risk.  Japanese breeds are particularly sensitive to symptoms.  Symptoms can include:

  • Drooling
  • Nausea
  • Oral Irritation
  • Pale Gums
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Weakness
  • Lethargy
  • Inability to Exercise
  • Elevated Heart Rate
  • Elevated Respiratory Rate
  • Collapse
