There are three separate types of antidepressants; Selective Serotonin Re-Uptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs), and Tricyclics.  All of these work on the Central Nervous System and can have moderate to severe symptoms, depending on the drug, the dosage, and the weight of the dog and onset can be very rapid.  Some dogs are given these for behavioral issues but human  prescriptions account for a large number of pet poisonings each year.  A vet should be seen immediately if your dog has ingested antidepressants.  Symptoms may include:

  • Agitation
  • Aggression
  • Panting
  • Drooling
  • Sedation
  • Elevated heart Rate
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Fever
  • Dilated Pupils
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
