This is a non-steroidal, anti-inflammatory medication that works on three different levels; lowering swelling, pain relief, and reduction of clotting.  It is used for both human and canine medicine but the dosages are vastly different.  The active agent is salicylate or compounds that contain the same.  Dogs will have a toxic does at 22mg per pound per day.  The average aspirin will contain 325mg of salicylate and children’s aspirin has 81ng.  Pepto Bismol has a dosage of 300 mg per tablet and 262 per tablespoon.  Overdosing an animal will usually show symptoms in 4-6 hours in the circulatory, renal, or digestive systems with mild to severe signs.  Symptoms can include:

  • Black Tarry Stool
  • Changes in Respiration
  • Elevated Body Temperature
  • Lack of Appetite
  • Excessive Thirst
  • Excessive Urination
  • Liver Inflammation
  • Kidney Failure
  • Weakness
  • Collapse
  • Tremors
  • Seizures
  • Death
