There are several types of battery and each has its own risk.  Alkaline Dry Cell Batteries are the most common, such as AA, C, D batteries.  These contain potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide.  If the casing is punctured, these chemicals can leak out onto the exposed tissue and liquefy it, causing ulcerations that can be extraordinarily severe.  Lithium Batteries, often disk shaped, can cause an electric current to pass through the tissue that is around it, killing that tissue.  There are even batteries that contain heavy metals, such as cadmium, cobalt, lead, mercury, nickel, or zinc.  These can cause severe symptoms in as little as 15 mins or as much as 3 days.  A Vet shold be consulted immediately.  Symptoms can include:

  • Pawing at the Mouth
  • Oral Pain
  • Throat Pain
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Drooling
  • Lack of Appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Constipation
  • Fever
  • Death
