These are concentrated essences from trees and plants that are used in aromatherapy.  While proponents of this practice claim there is little or no danger to the animals, Animal Poison Control Center has reported deaths from as little as 7 drops of 100% Tea Tree Oil.  Some people may try to cut the concentrations of the oils to make it safer for the dogs but it can still be a lot for various biological systems to handle.  The liver and kidneys are particularly vulnerable but respiratory systems are also in danger.  Because there are a wide variety of essential oils, there are a wide variety of symptoms, depending on which was used and the amount used but should be considered moderate to severity in terms of toxicity.  Symptoms can include:

  • Vomiting
  • Low Body Temperature
  • Weakness
  • Lack of Coordination
  • Inability to Walk
  • Depression
  • Tremors
  • Coma
  • Reduced Breathing
  • Death
