An element that is found across a variety of sources, this is used in small doses to aid in prenatal vitamins, oxygen absorgers (found packed with electronics and some foods), fertilizers, hand warmers, and other sources.  As little as 20mg per pound can cause symptoms and 60mg per pound can be fatal.  The gastrointestinal system is most at risk but the liver and renal systems are also affected.  The poisoning goes in three stages.  The first shows mild gastrointestinal issues as the body digests the iron powder, lasting about 6 hours.  The second will seem to be a recovery period for half day to full day.  This is when the body’s cells are absorbing the iron.  At this point, the third stage begins, with the gastrointestinal issues showing again, along with issues in the liver, kidneys, and neurological system and red blood cells.  Symptoms can include:

  • Panting
  • Vomiting
  • Bloody Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloody Diarrhea
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Intestinal Blockage
  • Lethargy
  • Elevated Heart Rate
  • Shock
