A recreational drug that can be either smoked or made into food, such as brownies, dogs are usually only at risk from ingestion.  Second hand smoke doesn’t offer much risk for danger to dogs.  The active agent, tetrahydrocannabinol, works on the neurological system which can, in turn, affect both behavior and the respiratory system.  Most symptoms will present within a couple of hours but can take 1-3 days to recede.  Symptoms can include:

  • Drooling
  • Depression
  • Hyperactivity
  • Vocalization
  • Lack of Coordination
  • Sleepiness
  • Glazed Eyes
  • Dilated Pupils
  • Low Heart Rate
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Low Body Temperature
  • Respiratory Depression
  • Seizures
  • Coma
