There are a couple of different types of matches, soft and hard; dictated by the rigidity of the stem of the match. The head of the match contains potassium nitrates and sulpher. There are also coloring agents that have small amounts of heavy metals.  A single match holds little risk to a dog but many matches has slight to moderate danger from toxicity.  The greater issue would be one of intestinal blockage.  With enough matches, there is also a chance of toxicity, so that should not be disregarded.  Symptoms can include:

  • Lethargy
  • Vomiting
  • Agitation
  • Depression
  • Lack of Coordination
  • Low Blood Pressure
  • Low Heart Rate
