There are several different types of Bluebonnet that have seeds that are toxic to several types of animals. Some sources also claim that the leaves can be toxic as well, but that is not agreed on by all. The active agent is anagyrine alkaloid and may cause immediate effects but more commonly have congenital ramifications to unborn fetuses. Symptoms can include:
- Nervousness
- Drooling
- Frothing at the Mouth
- Lethargy
- Depression
- Lack of Appetite
- Difficulty Breathing
- Muscle Twitching
- Loss of Muscular Control
- Convulsions
- Coma
- Skeletal Deflects in Fetus
- Hepatic Degeneration
