This refers to a condition where the skin is pale pink, the eyes are pink, and the hair or fur is white. This situation occurs when the enzyme tyrosinase is not present and is required to make melanin, which gives pigment to our tissues. There are degrees of albinism from some traits being presented to true albinism. Traits may include whitening with still having some pigment present or spots of white. True albinism is incredibly rare and often causes deafness. Dogs with true albinism are more prone to sunburn and cancer as melanin protects the skin from sun radiation. Breeds most commonly showing traits are: Australian Shepherd, Beagle, Boston Terrier, Cocker Spaniel, Collie, Dachshund, English Bulldog, Great Dane, Shetland Sheepdog, and Welsh Corgi.
