These are congenital defects that cause cysts to grow that are filled with cerebrospinal fluid.  The cysts are typically located in the top vertebra or base of the brain.  It is an uncommon condition that rarely presents symptoms.  The only time that this becomes obvious are when the cysts press against the spinal cord or brain and cause enough pressure to disrupt normal activity.  Because humans can have this condition as well, we are aware of conditions that a dog could not normally make us aware of.  Symptoms can include:

  • Wobbly Gait
  • Exaggerated Gait
  • Abnormal Placement of Limbs
  • Leg and Back Pain
  • Numbness in the Legs
  • Seizure
  • Incontinence
