This occurs when the smooth cartilage that forms between a conjunction of two bones breaks down.  This can occur from many different places such as physical trauma, genetic condition, immune system attacking the cartilage, and natural erosion that occurs over time.  Larger breeds, overweight dogs, and very active breeds are more prone to this condition.  Once the condition has presented, it cannot be repaired or cured.  It can be treated with various options, depending on the severity of the condition.  Cold weather or rain can make symptoms worse.  If a dog has Arthritis, low impact behaviors will be very important for their comfort and well being.  Symptoms can include:

  • Stiffness
  • Limping
  • Difficulty Getting Up
  • Lameness
  • Sore Joints
  • Swollen Joints
  • Sitting or Laying in Odd Positions
  • Uncomfortable in Certain Positions
  • Hesitant to Jump, Run, or Climb Stairs
