This is a congenital heart defect where the atrial septum, the wall that separates the left and right atira, two of the four chambers of the heart.  This defect causes the heart to work harder to do the same work as a heart without the defect.  Small defects may not even be known about while larger defects can force the heart to work so much that it begins to fail.  While a serious case can be repaired with surgery, minor cases are often ignored.  Symptoms can include:

  • Inability to Exercise
  • Fainting
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Coughing
  • Heart Murmur
  • Bluish Gums and Skin
  • Fluid Build-up in Abdomen
  • Swelling of Abdomen
