This is a genetic condition in the Basenji breed that is passed genetically.  It is a severe and deadly form of Irritable Bowel Disease, similar to IPSID.  IT most often appears in the first couple of years of a dog’s life.  The stomach and small intestine become laced with inflammatory cells.  This interferes with the ability to properly digest food.  This can be treated but will be a cyclical and lifelong condition.  It is also of note that the disease can be triggered by significant stressful events.  Symptoms can include:

  • Loss of Appetite
  • Chronic Diarrhea
  • Malabsortion
  • Dietary Sensitivity
  • Weight Loss
  • Lesions in the Small Intestine
  • Ulcers on the Ears
  • Dry, Coarse Coat
  • Hair Loss
  • Thyroid Abnormalities
  • Death
