This is a highly infectious upper respiratory infection that causes inflammation of the trachea and bronchi.  If untreated, it can reach down further into the lungs.  The dry, hacking cough that it causes is very distinct and is part of what spreads the disease.  The disease is spread through dogs breathing or coughing on one another or even from sharing a water bowl.  Because of this, dog runs, parks, and boarding facilities are at high risk of causing bordetella.  The incubation period is between 2 days and 2 weeks.  Once treatment has begun, there is a ten day quarantine that is in effect to protect other dogs.  It should also be noted that the disease can be spread between dogs and cats species.  Symptoms can include:

  • Dry Hacking Cough
  • Retching
  • Gagging
  • Nasal Discharge
  • Fever
  • Lethargy
