This is a viral infection that occurs in dogs that have not been properly vaccinated or are too young to have received the vaccinations.  The infection has gastrointestinal effects and is spread through feces.  There is a severely acute form that can affect the muscle tissue of the heart, leading to lifelong heart issues.  It is s relatively new virus, only being found in the 1960s, and causes problems for the veterinarians because it mutates very often into new strains.  Because the dogs that are most commonly affected are puppies without a developed immune system, the infection can be fatal, usually from severe dehydration.  The incubation period can be up to two weeks, during which the virus is still being spread through the feces.  Symptoms can include:

  • Lethargy
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Bloody Diarrhea
  • Sever Weight Loss
  • Dehydration
  • Damage to the Cardiac Muscle
