This is a congenital group of rare disorders that are based around the cilia.  Throughout the body’s organs, there are small hair-like structures, called cilia, that move fluids or cells.  Normally, the cilia are coordinated and move together in order to regulate the way that the organs work.  Without the coordination, there can be abnormal fluid build up in the brain, infertility, respiratory infections and other problems.  Lesions can also form around improperly performing cilia.  There are many breeds than can be affected, such as Bichon Frise and Old English Sheepdog.  Symptoms can include:

  • Moist Cough Caused by Exercise
  • Nasal Discharge of Mucus and Pus
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Panting
  • Pale Gums
  • Sinus Infection
  • Respiratory Infection
  • Male Infertility
  • Abnormal Bone Growth
  • Renal Lesions
  • Brain Swelling
