The trachea, or windpipe, is a tube made of tough rings of cartilage that allows air to enter the lungs.  There is a condition that reduces the rigidity of the cartilage, allowing it to partially collapse during normal breathing.  This makes a harness, rather than a collar, critically important.  This will normally occur later on in life, in very overweight dogs, due to infection of the airways.  It will be most present in toy breeds.   Symptoms can include:

  • Honking Cough
  • Exercise Intolerance
  • Labored Breathing
  • Bluish Gums
  • Fainting
