This is a partial or total hearing loss that can be either temporary or permanent.  There are multiple causations, such as wax build up, damage to the inner ear, or untreated ear infections.  There are also certain breeds that are prone to congenital hearing loss, but these usually have specific coloring, such as piebald, spotted, or merle colorations.  A dog can still lead a full and happy life if they have hearing loss but we have to adjust the way that we help them interact with the world.  Symptoms can include:

  • Non-response to Their Name
  • Non-response to Doorbells or Other Excitation Sounds
  • Non-response to Noisy Toys
  • Non-response to Loud Noises
  • Inattentiveness
  • Change in Obedience
  • Excessive Barking
  • Difficulty Waking
  • Change in Personality
  • Head Tilt towards Deaf Side
