This is a condition where the esophagus does not open properly.  If the opening that is behaving improperly is at out top of the esophagus, then food cannot be swallowed.  It will either fall out of the mouth or into the trachea.  If the opening that is not working properly is at the lower esophagus, no food can pass into the stomach and will be forced back up.  Once again, it will be forced out of the mouth or into the trachea.  This can lead to serious pulmonary conditions as well as further disorders of the esophagus.  Symptoms can include:

  • Food or Water Falling From the Mouth
  • Coughing
  • Choking
  • Vomiting
  • Breathing Issues
  • Pneumonia
  • Weight Loss
  • Dehydration
