There are tubules in the kidneys that are used to reabsorb minerals, vitamins, and sugars back into the body to be reused. In this hereditary condition, nothing gets reabsorbed and is dumped out into the urine instead. The result will be an electrolyte imbalance and dehydration.   This is a progressive disease that can be managed to allow a long and happy life with proper treatment.  Breeds that are at risk; Basenji, Border Terrier, Labrador Retriever, Norwegian Elkhound, Schnauzer, Shetland Sheepdog, Whippet, and Yorkshire Terrier.  Symptoms can include:

  • Excessive Water Intake
  • Excessive Urination
  • Reduced Appetite
  • Weight Loss
  • Lethargy
  • Rickets
  • Overall Poor Condition
