This is a condition where the stomach flips on itself, sealing off both ends.  This can easily happen after eating if exercise occurs but can happen less predictably as well.  The stomach will fill with gas, pressing outward and onto the other organs.  There are multiple risks of death here, including the stomach splitting open, pressure against the lungs that restricts breathing, or cutting off blood flow to the heart.  This is a rapidly developing situation and veterinarian attention should be sought immediately if you see symptoms.  Larger breeds are more prone to this condition, especially those with very large chests.  Breeds with particular risk; Akita, Basset Hound, Bloodhound, Boxer, German Shepherd, Gordon Setter, Great Dane, Irish Setter, Saint Bernard, and Weimaraner.  Symptoms can include:

  • Swollen Stomach
  • Drooling
  • Dry Retching
  • Pale Gums
  • Rapid Heartbeat
  • Shortness of Breath
  • Death
