This is a parasitic roundworm that is transmitted through mosquito bites and can gain a length of up to twelve inches long.  One the dog has been bitten, it takes over half a year for the worms to become adult and cause significant damage.  The worms use the circulatory system to travel about the body, ending up in the heart and lungs, doing damage there and surrounding organs.  It is easily prevented but very costly to treat.  Some dogs will not show symptoms until they have been infected for years.  Symptoms can include:

  • Coughing
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Vomiting
  • Weight Loss
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Weakness
  • Exhaustion
  • Fainting
  • Fluid Retention in Abdomen
  • Anemia
  • Heart Failure
  • Pale Gums
  • Coffee Colored Urine
  • Death
