This is a genetic disorder that causes progressive destruction of the neural pathways in both the central nervous system and peripheral nervous system.  While this can present in puppies as young as 6 weeks, delayed onset can allow this to show later on, in adult life.  In the neurons, there are both swelling and atrophy that occurs.  The onset begins slowly but develops more and more as time goes on.  This is a fatal disease.  Symptoms can include:

  • Lack of Coordination
  • Strange Placement of Limbs While Walking
  • Stiff Limbs
  • Weakness
  • Tremors in Head and Neck
  • Atrophy of Muscles
  • Scoliosis
  • Difficulty Swallowing
  • Blindness
  • Neural Degeneration
  • Death
