See Congenital Heart Defect. This is a congenital defect that creates a narrowing of the pulmonary valve on the right side of the heart. This creates an abnormal pressure within the heart and forces the right side of the heart to do more work. This, in turn, enlarges the size of the heart and overworks it. There are three points that can be narrowed; valvular pulmonic stenosis, enlargement at the valve, or subvalvular pulmonic stenosis, which occurs below the valve, and supravalvuar pulmonic stenosis, which occurs above the valve. Certain breeds are more prone to this: Beagle, Boxer, Chihuahua, Cocker Spaniel, English Bulldog, Mastiff, Miniature Schnauzer, Samoyed, Scottish Terrier, and West Highland Terrier. Symptoms can include:

  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Abdominal Distention
  • Difficulty Breathing
  • Fainting
  • Fluid Build-Up in Abdomen and Limbs
  • Heart Failure
